Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture (FBA)
FBA is responsible for research and education within aquatic biosciences. The faculty aspires to be a leading international arena in the High North for knowledge dissemination in aquaculture, marine ecology and marine genomics. In recent years, FBA has undergone major developments and projects financed by prestigious programmes like FRIPRO (The Research Council of Norway) and ERC Consolidator Grants (The European Research Council) are part of the faculty’s existing project portfolio. The faculty has approximately 110 academic and technical/administrative employees, of which ca 40 % is recruited internationally.

FBA offers bachelor’s degree programmes in Biology, International Marketing, Aquaculture Management, Veterinary Nursing and a unique joint bachelor degree in Animal Science that grants students direct transfer to the studies at the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy, Slovakia. The faculty also offers a master’s degree programme in Biology and Aquaculture, and a doctoral degree programme in Aquatic Biosciences.

Professors in aquatic biosciences

Nord University (Bodø, Norway), Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture is recruiting two professors to further strengthen the faculty in general and specifically the PhD programme in Aquatic Biosciences.

FBA excels in education and research in aquatic biosciences and intends to strengthen the academic team by employing two new professors. The faculty’s strategic research areas include aquaculture, marine ecology and marine genomics. Within aquaculture, we focus on reproduction biology, immunology, preventive health and nutrition, and seafood quality. The marine ecology group studies biophysical interactions, benthos fauna and marine molecular ecology, with major attention to the fjords and coastal areas. Within marine genomics, we focus on functional and ecological aspects of genetic variation in aquaculture and natural populations.

About the position
The successful candidates are expected to teach and supervise students at all three levels, with special emphasis on guiding students enrolled in the doctoral programme in Aquatic Biosciences. The candidates should be able to develop and carry out collaborative multidisciplinary research projects in the areas of strategic interest for FBA. The appointees should actively seek for grants from competitive national and international funding agencies and help build up the portfolio of research projects at FBA.

The successful candidates should have a doctoral degree within one of the research areas relevant for FBA as described above. Responsibilities include complementing our existing strengths and developing an independent research programme that is synergistic with the scientific aims of the faculty. Competence in genome biology, epigenetics, systems biology, microbial genomics or microbial ecology will be highly relevant for the positions. It will be considered an advantage if the candidates have built the aforementioned competence within the area of aquatic biosciences. The successful candidates should have:

  • Extensive experience in teaching and supervision
  • Excellent track record in research grant procurement
  • Strong record of publications and dissemination
  • Dynamic national and international research network
  • Experience in academic leadership

The position requires a highly motivated and dynamic person with good interpersonal skills.

The successful candidate must be fluent in English. An appointee of non-Scandinavian nationality is expected to learn Norwegian within three years after the employment.
For the assessment of candidates, the selection committee will make use of the qualification descriptions for professor as they appear in the note Coordination of the procedures for promotion to full professor at the science faculties of universities in Norway, adopted by the National Faculty Meeting of Sciences and National Council for Technological Education, January 2012.

Professors must have a basic formal pedagogical competence, and applicants that cannot yet document such competence, are requested to complete this within the first two years of employment.

FBA’s offer to the successful candidate
You will be a member of a fast growing successful scientific team at Nord University. The faculty has modern research facilities, including those for research on live aquatic organisms and advanced genomics. During the first year of employment, the successful candidate will be allocated one PhD position, and one additional position during the second year of employment. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with the candidate’s accomplishments.

Salary and Working Conditions
The salary offered is in accordance with the Norwegian State Salary Scale. The Salary will be determined by agreement.

As an employee at the Nord University, you become a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and get access to other social benefits. A statutory amount to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will automatically be deducted from the salary.
The successful person must abide by the laws, agreements and directives that apply to the position at any time.

Selection procedure
As the first step in the evaluation process, a Selection Committee will assess all applications and the most relevant applications will sent to the Academic Evaluation Committee appointed for these positions. Based on the evaluation report, the faculty management will invite the most highly ranked candidates for an interview and a trial lecture.
